The Philharmonic Orchestra of Jamaica
May 2023 will mark ten years since a group of classically-trained musicians committed to forming an orchestra for the benefit of the nation with a vision of becoming the premier orchestra in the country. The new group would provide musicians, composers and conductors with a viable avenue to hone their skills and showcase the abundant natural musical talent of Jamaica. Thus was born the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jamaica (POJ).
A key objective of the group was to promote and expand the body of Jamaican classical music literature, a goal at which they have been very successful. Over the past ten years the POJ has performed many works from illustrious local composers such as Peter Ashbourne, Dr. Andrew Marshall, Jon Williams, Ted Runcie and Paulette Bellamy.
The POJ also aims to raise the level of musicianship by providing educational workshops using specialist tutors. At least five such interventions have taken place.
The POJ attained its registration as a charitable organization in 2019.
There is eager anticipation of what lies in store for the POJ in the next decade.
